A story

TBA-P10-Zoz Session - Marshall & mike.jp

Why the Blue Accursed? Because it is probably the founding act of a passion for music which is still living on today.

It started off with a simple idea exchanged over a hamburger and rapidly evolved into a band gathering five fifteen-year old friends: Chris, Ludo, Eric, Jim and Gaëtan. The Blue Accursed were born. And we decided on a serious challenge: playing our own music live, no cover whatsoever, and in English (quite a challenge in 1990s France).

Soon after,I was hired as a lyricist by the Five’s Session, a band recently formed in my high-school. The band played gigs, recorded audio cassettes to sell them to the students of our high-school and even shot a video in a factory for the song Charlie’s last days.

The Five’s Session had been active for about a year and a half and ended their experience with a concert in a preparatory school of fine arts in Paris. As for the Blue Accursed, a couple of line-up switches were needed after Ludo and Eric left the band. A female singer also joined at that period.

Chris’s melodic bass lines and Jim’s piano arrangements gave body to my songs and the three of us soon became the soul of the band.

First gigs to run the new set, traiblazing at the music festival of the city of Asnières, we wished to travel across the Channel and seize any opportunity to play in public.

But things are not that easy when you’re barely twenty. Celebrating the fourth anniversary, the band organised auditions to find a replacement female singer.

Jim left the band that year, leaving the songs without piano which required some work to modify the arrangements. A new set of songs was written, dedicated to Ireland.

Soon after, we recorded a demo, clean enough to use it to publicize our music and find concerts but, unfortunately, without piano nor female vocals.

After our participation to the 1996 Music Festival, keeping regular rehearsals became more complicated as every one was being taken up by their studies. Playing gigs was even more complicated. The band then shifted to an acoustic trio format until the band reunited two years later.

Eventually, the experience ended in 1999, but three of us joined into a band of soul music covers in the early 2000s, the line-up including a saxophone and a trumpet.

The other guitarist and I would attempt other musical experiences, as the Lab with a singer-actress and the front man of a glam-rock band.

As for me, I wrote my first computer assisted compositions in 2000, mostly instrumental pieces, Doomed to Die, Movie Song, Insomnia...
