Suite Minérale

Ce que diront les Roches
(What stones will say by Simon Andrieu)

Twenty-minute long musical piece composed to accompany the reader all along a text by Simon Andrieu, Ce que diront les roches, featured in the latest anthology of the Mille Saisons award organised by Le Grimoire publisher, Désatres/des Astres Humains (Human Stars/Disasters).

Vue aérienne d'une plage

The suite consists of six movements: Extinction, Great Land, Anoé, Star Day, Time in reverse & the March of Inescapability.

‘I was looking for something very mineral, as a blend of rock and clay, ochre and gray shades, more earthy than dull, ringed with blue, reminiscent of either water or a night sky. I could feel a deep pulse, that of a heart, that of Time, sometimes organic, sometimes mechanical, jolting, then flowing, speeding up and stumbling again, broken by breathing. As a damaged and uncertain metronome or a dusty and weary clock illustrating the particular connection to time depicted in the short-story.’

‘The tones had to merge and, still, remain overlaid, as if they were layers, between outcropping and distant sounds, in order to describe the opposition between what can be perceived and what remains buried and concealed. As a tension between certainty and doubt. As a reflection of dissonant and sometimes conflicting perceptions of the world, the instruments oppose and answer each other, converse and pit themselves against one another. The final ties it all together in a dark yet vigorous melody, cadenced by a near electric staccato, as if time resumed its march towards an outcome which does not belong to us and against which rebelling would be pointless. The march of inescapability.’
